O’Donnell Quarter Horses, home of Tim and Mary O’Donnell and our children Amber and Cody, is roughly 60 miles west of Bozeman, Montana.  Our ranch is located in the beautiful South Boulder Canyon of Cardwell, Montana, where we enjoy breeding, raising, and training top quality Quarter Horses.  Our goal at O’Donnell Quarter Horses is to produce performance horses that will excel on the ranch and in the arena as well as being solid pleasure horses.

O’Donnell Quarter Horses stand two stallions.  Weavers Doc Ima Poco, “A.K.A Rope,” comes from the great program of Stan and Nancy Weaver in Big Sandy, Montana.  He was the talk of their 2000 production sale and ultimately the high selling horse.  One look at him and his pedigree, it’s easy to understand why he drew the attention that he did.  As the demand and popularity of the Weaver Quarter Horses keeps getting stronger and stronger, we are more and more thankful to have the privilege to have this elite stallion in our program.  Rope is a 1999 buckskin stallion with a unique copper coloring and four black feet. He is 91% National Foundation Quarter Horse, stands 15.1 hh, and weighs 1175 lbs.

Rope has “all” the qualities you want in a cow horse: conformation, pedigree, bone, speed, a fantastic disposition, and a love for working cattle.

He has a beautiful head and it’s full of brains.  His pedigree is intently influenced by the legendary quarter horses, Poco Bueno and Doc Bar, which is where all of his NATURAL cow sense comes from.

Rope is making his mark as a sire of very correct and trainable colts and is throwing a high percentage of buckskins and palominos.  His colts have been sale toppers and near top sellers at the RMBA Sales. They’ve also stood in the winners circle at the RMBA Shows.

O’Donnell Quarter Horses also stand a speed bred stallion, Toro The Blurr. Toro is a 2002 bay stallion and currently stands 15.3 hh and weighs 1250 lbs. He is the total package with looks, size, speed, and an impressive proven pedigree.

Toro’s pedigree is loaded with as many “proven” speed horses as you’ll find anywhere.  His sire, Jet Toro (SI 104 AAA) is by Easy Jet (SI 100 AAA).  Jet Toro (deceased) was one of the top barrel horse sires in the nation.  Jet Toro was also a full brother to Easy Six and Easy Toro.  Both are sires of several NFR and futurity champions.

Toro’s dam, Credit Card Blurr (SI 89 AA) is an own daughter of the legendary speed horse sire MurrTheBlurr (TB) and a great grand daughter of the immortal Dash For Cash (SI 114 AAA) and Game Plan (x Easy Jet).  Toro’s pedigree is so intently stacked with successful proven speed horses, he can’t help but have a positive influence on his foals.

Toro is in barrel training now and hopefully will compete in 2007.  Toro has taken to the barrels very naturally and is really starting to hunt them.  Something that has amazed us is, as intently speed bred as Toro is, he also has shown a real interest in cattle.  At the little backyard ropings, he really likes to work the steers.

Toro’s first colts hit the ground this spring and man are they classy.  He put a great hip and head on them along with his great disposition.

As stated earlier, the goal of the O’Donnell Quarter Horses is to produce horses that will excel on the ranch & in the arena and be solid pleasure & recreational horses.  Our program stresses a high importance on proven pedigrees.  We feel that solid, proven pedigrees will take most of the guess work out of what a horse will or won’t do.  As important as it is to breed to a quality stallion we strongly believe that any mare must be of equal or better quality than the stallion if a foal is expected to meet or exceed one’s expectations.  We believe our broodmares measure up to this statement.  Almost all of our mares have been proven on the ranch, the track, or in the arena.  They’re proven mares with athletic ability, good bone, correct conformation, kind and willing dispositions, and have purple pedigrees.  Our mares are daughters and grand daughters of the great quarter horses:  Sugar Bars, Dry Doc, Docs Little Pesco, Paddys Irish Whiskey, Peppy San Badger,  Doc O’Dynamite, Freckles Playboy, Murrtheblurr, Jet Smooth, Gay Bar King, My Leroy Brown, On The Money Red, Band of Azure, Master Hand, Azure Te, Frenchmans Guy, and Sun Frost.

Our mares foal outside on their own on pastures in view from the house.  Come spring our mares and colts are turned out on big pastures of rolling to steep hills.  We believe this helps build muscle and sturdy bone.  Approximately four weeks prior to weaning, the foals are halter broke, wormed, and freeze branded.  Because of our pride and confidence in our breeding program, all the colts will carry the O’Donnell’s “TM” brand.

We sell most of our horses as weanlings, private treaty and through the Rocky Mountain Breeders Association (RMBA) Sale.

The 2004 RMBA Sale was a real highlight for us as our two Rope weanlings took the overall high selling horse & reserve high selling horse.  The high selling horse, WHISKEYFORMYFRIENDS (out of a PADDY’s IRISH WHISKEY DAUGHTER), was purchased as a stallion prospect by Bob Bender of Gold Creek, MT.  The reserve high selling horse, DOC IMA PLAYBOY (out of a Freckles Playboy Grand Daughter) was purchased as an O-Mok-See prospect by Dave Whitman of Washington.  These same two weanlings were also champion & reserve champion in the 2004 RMBA Horse Show weanling stallion halter class. Rope was chosen as champion halter stallion at this show, besting a field of 12 other very quality stallions.

O’Donnell Quarter Horses was also in the spot light in 2006.  Rope’s colt, TM DOCS PESO (out of a granddaughter of Dry Doc and Docs Little Pesco) was the high selling weanling of RMBA’s 2006 Sale.  This colt was purchased by Rod and Sandie Lenz of Lakeside, MT as a stallion prospect.  TM DOCS PESO was also the champion weanling stallion halter of the 2006 RMBA Horse Show.  At this Horse Show, our senior stallion, Rope was chosen as champion halter stallion and our speed bred stallion, Toro was chosen as reserved champion halter stallion.  Rope also placed first in the Get of Sire Class.  Our mare, SEN FOR FRECLKES took champion in the Produce of Dam Class.  Reserve champion in this class was given to another one of our mares, Credit Card Blurr. These are small victories for our program, but they are indicators to us that our program is on the right track

When the O’Donnell family isn’t breeding and training horses at home, they spend a lot of time traveling to jackpot barrel races, and O-Mok-Sees where the whole family is involved.

Cody competes on his five year old mare “Promise” at the local O-Mok-Sees and jackpot barrel and pole bending races.  Promise is showing a lot of potential in barrel racing and should be a strong competitor in 2007.

Amber has been competing on her great eleven year old horse “Sassy” that she has trained herself.  In their career, they have won two saddles and many other prizes.  Amber is currently training our own daughter of Frenchmans Guy and hopes to campaign her in 2007.

Mary just finished her third year competing in the O-Mok-Sees on “Stormy”, a horse that Cody trained and gave her as a Mother’s Day gift in 2005.   They placed in three races include winning their first – first place in the Keg Race at the 2006 National O-Mok-See in Gillette, Wyoming.

If you are looking to breed that favorite mare, purchase your next prospect, or just enjoy looking at beautiful horses our welcome mat is always out.  We’d like to thank all the folks who bred mares to our stallions and bought our colts.  Hope to hear from you in 2007.

God Bless,  Tim, Mary, Amber, and Cody
